Kia Ora Rātā Whānau,

It was lovely to hear of many tamariki spending time with family and friends over the break!  Sadly some whānau had some nasty bugs and we hope those pass quickly, the end of winter is in sight!

Birthdays

We have had some birthdays since the last blog.  Chloe celebrated her birthday at the beginning of July, then Mila and Adeline this week.  Everyone in the class really enjoys celebrating birthdays, with the reflections involved in the birthday walk.  We think about that particular child each year of their life so far.  We remember which classes they have been in, interests and hobbies they’ve experienced and of course special birthday parties and cakes they have had!

The Magic of the Montessori Classroom

It has been really interesting delving into the Montessori approach and observing how this works in Rātā and the wider school.  One aspect of the Montessori approach which really ignites a passion for learning is the choice involved in the work cycle.  There are lessons and follow up work which needs to be done but there is also a lot of freedom where children are able to choose their work and are given the time, space and autonomy to get engrossed!  At any one time during the work cycle there is mahi being done from a wide range of the curriculum such as Maths, Geography, Literacy, Art, Science and lots more!  Children work independently or collaboratively to practice and experiment with a wide range of Montessori materials.

Ngā mihi nui,

Tania, Robyn, Venice and Aimee
